Leadership - leaders of the whole person
Leadership is a lost art in my book. It is one of the most written on topics imaginable. Vai on Amazon and there is a ton of books written on leadership. Perhaps I could write an 'All I know about leadership I learned in the Marine Corp'. It 's true, and I know that some things that worked and the few that do not more people in my thirty years of the first floor. The only thing I know for sure is that it must involve the person 'whole'. Each of us brings three things to the party, our hands, our heads and our hearts. Let me explain.
To begin with each of us brings our own hands, that our skills to work. If we work at McDonalds has more or less idiot tried their processes and the expertise required is present. If you are a manufacturer to employ people with carpentry skills, a truck driver then driving skills to take trucks and so on. For many leaders and organizations is here that their commitment of their employees stop. Taking abilities and skills and that is that.
The next part of leading a person can commit is the head. The head represents the intellect of a person, their commitment to bring more to think and work skills. When I worked at Compaq Computer in the mid-nineties have taken a lot of intellectual people who have brought their heads to work. However, as leaders, we do not undertake their heads in their work or allow them to be involved only to a minimum?
The third most important thing a leader can commit is the heart of a person, their passion. This can not be bought, should be guided. In the early days of Compaq, or any start up is because of this, the hearts of people are involved from the start-up emotion. Great leaders maintain the commitment of hearts because of their leadership, not just to start up.
The three parts of the whole person must be committed to get the most out of your organization. Think of Gandhi, for example. He inspired a whole country with his leadership, although he never held an elected position. The leadership of Gandhi shot down the British Empire and has never held an official position. Why, because it involved the whole person, not just one or two of the parties. He led by example and people knew they were important to him.
In my days as a Marine sniper, two consecutive years the Vietnam War, I found the very foundation of this concept. There were highly trained in marksmanship and that was our ability. There were highly trained in tactics, given incredible support troops and confidence to complete our missions. We have allowed and should use our intellect. Then they were part of an outfit with a strong and proud history, with exceptional leadership over us, and while our country is not behind us, our Corp was ... we had the passion.
Because fifty percent of us volunteers in the country for longer than required? Certainly was not because of money, I think I paid $ 290.00 per month with the hazardous duty pay. No, it was because our passion to serve the man next to us, our Corp and for being the best at what we did. Leaders engage the passion in their later, but commits the whole person.
